How did people wash their hair before shampoo was invented?

I believe soap was used to wash hair.

Confirmed:

During the early stages of shampoo, English hair stylists boiled soap in water and added herbs to give the hair health and fragrance. Kasey Hebert was the first known maker of shampoo, and the origin is currently attributed to him. He sold his first shampoo, ';Shaempoo'; in the streets of his home, London, England.

In the old days, traditionally shampoo is made from rice husk and rice straw (merang). The husks and straws are burned into ash, and the ashes (which have alkaline properties) are mixed with water to form lather. The ashes and lather are scrubbed into the hair. However, this makes the hair dry. Therefore, after shampooing, Indonesians apply coconut oil to remoisten the hair. (See: Kompas - In Indonesian).

Originally soap and shampoo were very similar products; both were often made from surfactants, a type of detergent. Shampoo became the logical evolution of personal hygiene products, and targeted the specific needs of hair and not the body in general. Through out the course of the 20th century a number of specifically designed shampoos were released that gently and effectively cleaned a variety of different hair types. Now, synthetic surfactants are primarily used in shampoo. How did people wash their hair before shampoo was invented?
One way to make shampoo is through the process of saponification where they take a fat or oil and turn it into soap. The native americans used animal fat to make soap, so did some europeans. But that was changed when the invention of a seed presser that expels oils out of seeds such as olive, avocado, coconut. But I think before shampoo was made people washed their hair with water and oil.How did people wash their hair before shampoo was invented?
Clay has been used to wash hair.

The Indians have soapnut which they grind up and then mix to a paste. It is a wonderful cleanser and leaves the hair very silky.

Bonnets were traditionally worn to keep the hair clean for longer. Muslims and some Christian sects keep women's hair covered, which also helps keep it clean.
in history of fashion we were told that they shaved their heads and wore wigs because they had lice so bad that's why they started wearing fur so they could get the lice to be on the fur instead of their bodies...it was called a flea fur which was a rabbits foot then bigger pieces
Well according to my French teacher, French people did not bathe, and that's why they created cologne; so they would smell good. They also cut their hair very short so they would not get lice, hence the giant Marie Antoinette wigs.
In my aunt's time, she lived in the Philippines [she was born in 1934] and she said she washed her hair with water and a bar of soap. Before that, I'm not sure.
They didn't that's why they wore wig's at least those that could afford to do so.

The poor had to sell their hair or leave it unwashed.
In the early 50's my grandma used to wash my hair with carbolic soap, sitting in a tin bath in front of the fire!
They just didn't wash it.

In fact there are some people now that never, ever wash their hair.

nothing they just bathed in rivers and had lice and nits(i think thats how you spell it)
soap, soap has been arond since the Roman era.

Is there such thing as hair darkening shampoo?

I have dark blond hair, but i'd like it to be a little more brunette (right now its sort of an in-between color). I don't want to dye it and have to deal with roots. Which products have you tried, and do they work?Is there such thing as hair darkening shampoo?
Not that I know...though I highly doubt there is such a shampoo. Is there such thing as hair darkening shampoo?
there's no DARKENING shampoo, but if you dye your hair then you can but color enhancement which keeps the color in, so it doesn't wash out or fade (which happens a lot if you hair is blonde and your dying it a drastically darker color.)
there is a pantene shampoo that I have used and all it does is help maintain your natural color. I don't think by using the shampoo for another hair color will do anything.
I have used this color enhancing shampoo and conditioner. Yes it has helped !

I hoped I helped ^_^

  • If i use hair growth shampoo how less will i have to wait til my hair grows out?

ok so im growing out my hair four inches which takes probbly bout 4 months.... if i start using hair growth shampoo or some hair growth vitamins.. how less should i have to wait ?If i use hair growth shampoo how less will i have to wait til my hair grows out?
You just have to be patient and let your hair grow on it's own time. Keep it healthy and try to resist the urge to cut it.If i use hair growth shampoo how less will i have to wait til my hair grows out?
Those don't work. You can't grow your hair faster, So your hair will grow just like it does now.
Sad to tell you, won't be any less. Same time.

    There's really no way of accelerating your hair growth... Even though many products out there do claim to help your hair grow faster they just ';Promote Regular hair growth';

There are many things you might be doing that might slow down your regular hair growth (Such as a poor diet, smoking, stress, lack of sleep, etc.) so that's a good way to start... Here's a few things you can do to get your hair growing again. NATURAL things...

-Start eating many fruits and veggies (Especially the dark ones which are higher in Anti-Oxidants that work wonders for the health of hair)

-Cut down on stress and try to relax, start or continue exercising and get at least 8 hours of sleep a day. The more you stress about your hair the less it will grow, as ironic as it sounds stress automatically slows down hair growth.

-Get a multivitamin specifically for that (GNC has a very good Hair, skin and nails formula, but take into consideration that these won't work by themselves as long as you are not carrying a healthy diet.

Regular hair growth is a process just because hair growth is the first thing that the body slows down in order to keep energy for much more important organs in your body like your brain, lungs and heart, there's no miracle shampoo that will give you 5 inches of hair in 1 week, but there's many ways to definitely make it better as I mentioned.

    Hope this helps.

OH AND BY THE WAY... Prenatal vitamins DO NOT help your hair grow faster. The only reason why preggo ladies hair grows super-fast has to do with their hormones, not the vitamin itself.

If it did you would be screaming when you washed your hair*. It may enhance your blond hair, but i don't think there is actually dye in the shampoo, some people put dye in shampoo, but i don't think manufacturers make it that way.

Herbal Essences shampoo/conditioner (Hello Hydration) and the serum is Glossing Polish by Proclaim (Color and heat protection). It's in a red bottle and I found it at Sally's.
